Today’s NaPoWriMo prompt challenged me to write a poem by imagining a window looking into a place or onto a particular scene. I wrote a poem the describes the point of view I have as my first grandchild — and the first grandchild in my family — is coming into the world.
I see you sleeping in your crib, a new branch on our tree,
The front of this long line has now come to you to carry on.
I see you stir, the weight of your generation you might not see,
We are standing in the Twilight, why you are the daughter of our dawn.
I see you open your eyes, taking in the wonders within your pillows,
While I wonder at the marvels you will witness in your lifetime.
I see you smile at my presence watching from your grand window,
Standing beside the family that will be with you for all time.
I see you kick your legs, a new body built for moving,
Wishing I could come in and raise you up on high,
I see you reach for me, your new hands, not use to doing,
Fear not, little one, I am here and will always be nearby.
