Today’s NaPoWriMo prompt challenged me to write a poem that poses a series of questions. I wrote a poem the explores the nature of wisdom and how all the things that go wrong in your life just might be where it comes from.
When do you become wise?
Does it happen when you place blocks in the wrong slots?
Or does it start when you can tie your shoes into knots?
It is when you feel your first loss with 2nd place in the spelling bee?
Maybe it happens after you fall from the top of that evergreen tree?
Could you gain it from a kiss that seems to be so long?
Or embrace it when your first loved one sings their last swan song?
Could it be not getting into college because of that ridiculous test?
Or does it hit you on the way to starting your Bootcamp slugfest?
I wonder if it’s when you take your first life?
Maybe it happens when you let the barbeque not end in strife?
Is it when you avoid your first fight?
Or could it be the day you truly learn that life is finite?
Does wisdom come from the things that wrong?
Is learned after you slam yourself headlong?
Or do you only find purpose the second after you die?
