NaPoWriMo21 Day 12: Rosetta of Planets

A poem about how the history of the Roman Empire might be translated between the languages of Martian to Jovian to Earthian.

NaPoWriMo21 Day 12 - Rosetta of Planets

Today’s NaPoWriMo prompt challenged me to create a poem using at least one word/concept/idea from each of two specialty dictionaries: Lempriere’s Classical Dictionary and the Historical Dictionary of Science Fiction. The poem I wrote is about how the history of the Roman Empire might be translated between the languages of Martian to Jovian to Earthian.

Rosetta of Planets

The Earthian scrolls read:

Romulus the Great,
Heir of Mars and Ilia,
Twin brother to Remus,
Grandson to King Numitor of Alba,
Castaway of Usurper Amulius,
Wild son of the She-Wolf,
Preserved by Saint Fastulus the Great Father’s shepherd,
Saviour of the Realm,
Slayer of Usurper Amulius the Betrayer,
Restorer of the Crown,
Prince to the House of Alba,
Future King under Numitor and Mars.

The Jovian songs sing:

Mars winds swirled into Ilia and breathed forth Romulus,
Yet, their clouds parted to reveal Remus as a shroud,
Both joining the edge of Numitor’s storm.
Behold! The Eye! The Eye was stolen from the swirl!
Rising against the storm on cold wind,
Amulius’s lightning did smash the wall and press Romulus to fog,
Expelling his swirl from the storm.
Behold! The Eye! The Eye was stolen from the swirl!
Fastulus’s steam swept gusts kept Romulus whistling,
Thwarting the crash sent from darkened skies in warm updrafts,
Moving new fronts towards the cradled sphere that blinded Amulius.
Behold! The Eye! The New Eye of Romulus!
Romulus did craft new walls for his own Eye,
Building a torrent with such fury that was not blunted,
Sanding down the pretender into scattered dust,
Then flowing back into the embracing swirl of Numitor’s storm.
Behold! The Eye! The New Eye of Romulus!

The Martians glyphs pronounce:

Mount Numitor’s stone was split,
While the House of Alba beheld heirs.
Romulus twined Remus were spared,
Glory stolen from Mars and smashed by wrought faults.
Betrayed in the quake that lifted mount Amulius to sky,
Lay hidden in canyon shadows blocked shades of night.
Sharping molten Romulus to iron points of might,
Then rising to erupt through the peak of mount Amulius.
Romulus did cool among the new summit,
Reclaimed is the rightful view to House of Alba!
Hail! Hail! Hail to the Rock of Mount Numitor!
Hail! Hail! Hail to Romulus upon the mountain!
