Todays’s NaPoWriMo prompt asks me to write a poem about a particular letter of the alphabet, or perhaps, the letters that form a short word. Doesn’t “S” look sneaky and snakelike? And “W” clearly doesn’t know where it’s going! Think about the shape of the letter(s), and use that as the take-off point for your poem.
I wrote a poem that highlights a snapshot of a Civil War soldier’s mind as they are ordered to charge the enemy defenses at the Battle of Shiloh.
The B of cannons firing over our heads.
The R keeps directing us to charge the flank.
The A rides before us with sword drawn.
The V end of my bayonet leads me over the hill.
The E line of other boys already waiting to shot us.
Everything about being BRAVE led me to the early grave.
