NaPoWriMo Day 06: Garden Lord

The poem I wrote is about The Giraffe found in Bosch’s The Garden of Earthly Delights (Panel One) and how it stands like a king among all the other animals.

NaPoWriMo Day 6 - Garden Lord

Today’s NaPoWriMo prompt is to write a poem from the point of view of one person/animal/thing from Hieronymous Bosch’s famous (and famously bizarre) triptych The Garden of Earthly Delights. The poem I wrote is about The Giraffe found in Bosch’s The Garden of Earthly Delights (Panel One) and how it stands like a king among all the other animals.

Garden Lord

Behold! The Garden Lord
who commands The Fountain!
Bow to my almighty figure
casting the longest shadow.

Beyond hubris.

Decorated with divinity
before the Sphinx.
I reach with purpose
but stand apart.

I tower above it all.

Inspired by perspective
nothing escapes my judgment.
Witness my court,
oh, beasts of antiquity.

All others must wallow.

Beneath my gaze
lower fauna abound.
None raise above
without wings.

My reign of spots.

Who out thinks
themselves a king
without my crown?
Teeth cannot threaten
my majestic ascension.

I choose teeth
before the bent knee.
Witness me
seizing dominion.

Behold! The Garden Lord
Guardian of The Fountain!
